How it Began

My Path to District Advocacy and a Commitment to You

In the last three years, we have all lived through a number of unprecedented challenges. These challenges have brought sweeping change to the landscape of our lives. In some cases they have brought us closer to our community and in others they have been divisive. During this time, many of us have had our eyes opened to obstacles present in the lives of our friends and neighbors that we cannot ignore. It was during this time that I first began to email our Board of Trustees about topics of importance to me and to start participating in the public comments sessions during some of the Board Meetings.

I first started interacting with the board as a concerned parent at the height of the pandemic. It was a time of confusion and figuring out how to keep each other safe while making sure that each of our students maintained access to meaningful and high-quality education. Because special education is personal to me and is where my advocacy work began, I saw gaps in the district’s vision for Reimagining Education and sought to address them.

Click to learn more about my first interactions with the board, in which I advocate for town hall meetings specifically to address the state of special education during the roll out of RRISD’s Reimagining Education plan, and again in which I follow up to request a more meaningful look at the specific issues facing special education families

I remain committed to finding the gaps in the framework of our education goals, seeking guidance from experts and stakeholders about what is necessary to bridge them, and consistently pursuing solutions. I am proud of the advocacy work that I have done on behalf of the students and staff of RRISD and will continue to partner with the current Board of Trustees to make sure that all stakeholders are considered during decision making processes.
